Sustainability

1M+ kg CO₂e reduced every year
4.8M kWh Energy saved every year
Zero Waste sent to landfill

Figures last updated July 2026

One of the UK’s most sustainably run major venues — and we’re just getting started.

By investing in innovative technology and working with expert partners, we’re cutting our environmental impact in ways that make a real difference. With over 1 million kg of CO₂e reduced annually, 4.8 million kWh in energy savings — worth more than £1.3 million every year — and zero waste to landfill, we’re transforming how a major venue can operate.

From generating renewable energy to smart building controls, better recycling and more sustainable travel, we’re working towards our ambitious 2030 sustainability goals — and setting a new standard for events venues.

Our Sustainability Action Plan, 2025–2030

Our plan is built on four pillars — each with clear initiatives, honest status updates and measurable targets. 18 initiatives across four pillars: 5 complete, 10 in progress, 3 exploring. Here’s where we are, and where we’re going.

  • Complete Delivered and operating
  • In Progress Under way now

Energy & Climate: Decarbonising the Stadium

We’re reducing our reliance on grid energy and moving away from fossil fuels across everything we do — from the roof above the pitch to the machines that maintain it.

On-Site Solar

Complete

Our rooftop solar array is live, generating 850,000 kWh of clean electricity every year — a huge step towards powering our operations sustainably.

Stadium Shop Solar

In Progress

New panels on the Stadium Shop are set for March 2027, adding another 100,000 kWh of renewable energy to our portfolio each year.

Smarter Energy Use

In Progress

Our Building Management System is optimising heating across the stadium, targeting a 10% reduction in demand — around 360,000 kWh a year.

Electrifying Our Future

In Progress

Our 5-Year Ground Asset Electrification Plan is under way. With our first 100% electric equipment in service, we’ve begun the shift to emissions-free pitch maintenance.

Lighting the Way Forward

In Progress

Phase 2 of our stadium lighting upgrade is under way, moving us closer to a 98% LED standard — boosting efficiency while cutting energy use.

Phasing Out Diesel

Exploring

We’ve mapped our diesel use and are working with our partners to cut vehicle emissions and move stadium island catering generators to electric alternatives by 2028.

The numbers behind the projects

3,350Solar Panels
850,000 kWhAnnual Production
£212kAnnual Savings
176,000 kgCO₂e Reduction

An ultra-thin, flexible silicon module solar PV system covering 6,500 sqm. This innovative solution overcame the challenges of our unique membrane roof and generates energy equivalent to all events held at the stadium.

3,000+Lights Replaced
1.6M kWhAnnual Reduction
£410kAnnual Savings
6 YearsPayback Period

Phase 1 of our comprehensive LED upgrade programme with DALI control systems for adjustable lighting levels. All stadium lighting will be converted to LED by 2030, dramatically reducing our energy consumption.

600+Devices Connected
68%Energy Reduction
£40kAnnual Savings
<2 YearsPayback Period

Smart technology providing full remote control of TVs, fridges, beer dispensers, and other appliances. This prevents energy waste during non-event periods and delivers significant operational efficiencies.

Resource Management & Circularity: Towards a Circular Stadium

We’re cutting waste at its source and managing water more responsibly — helping to protect and sustain the East London environment we’re proud to be part of.

Material Recovery

In Progress

We’ve achieved zero waste to landfill — and we’re not stopping there. From a 62% recycling rate today, we’re targeting 70% to keep more materials in the circular economy.

Rethinking Event Day Catering

In Progress

We’re exploring new ways to reduce waste across our kiosks, including assessing the carbon benefits of reusable cups and more sustainable food packaging.

Smarter Water, Greater Efficiency

Exploring

An independent review of our water network is helping us identify impactful upgrades — from tap aerators and smart metering to rainwater harvesting.

62%Recycling Rate
ZeroWaste to Landfill
10EV Charging Points

The vast majority of spectators arrive via public transport thanks to excellent connectivity. Combined with our zero waste to landfill policy and expanding EV infrastructure, we’re minimising our environmental impact across all operations.

Governance & Culture: Driving Institutional Change

We’re not just transforming our building — we’re reshaping how London Stadium operates, today and into the future.

Setting the Standard

Complete

Our new Sustainability Policy is live — formally approved and shared with all stadium partners, so everyone who works with us knows what we stand for.

Turning Ambition into Action

In Progress

Our new cross-departmental Sustainability Project Group brings teams together to accelerate progress and strengthen accountability.

Global Recognition

In Progress

We’re laying the foundations to achieve ISO 14001 environmental management accreditation by March 2027, aligning our operations with internationally recognised best practice.

Powered by Purpose

Complete

Sustainability is part of how we work every day: 100% of permanent stadium staff have sustainability actions built into their personal goals, making it a core measure of performance and success.

Building Climate Confidence

In Progress

17% of our permanent staff have completed Climate Literacy training in collaboration with the GLA — tracking steadily towards our first milestone of 20%.

Smarter Data

Exploring

We’re exploring specialist digital platforms to capture, manage and report our carbon data, supporting more accurate and transparent annual reporting.

Community: Connecting Responsibly

From lower-carbon travel for fans and staff to supporting local East London businesses, we’re connecting our community more responsibly.

Elite Fan Travel

Certified

An independent report confirmed that 87% of our fans travel to the stadium by public transport — a powerful reflection of our commitment to reducing event-day emissions.

Powering the Shift to Electric

Complete

10 electric vehicle charging units are fully installed and operational. We’re monitoring usage to guide future expansion as demand grows.

Supporting Our Local Economy

In Progress

We’re strengthening our commitment to the local economy, evolving our procurement to direct 20% of our spend to local businesses and partners.

What Can You Do?

Sustainability at London Stadium isn’t just solar panels and spreadsheets — it’s tens of thousands of you, every event. Every small action scales up massively. Here’s how you can play your part.

Use the Right Bin

It sounds small, but it isn’t. A stray burger box can ruin a whole batch of recycling — so take two seconds to find the right bin, keep our waste streams clean and help us hit our 70% recycling target.

Go Digital with Your Ticket

Zero paper waste and a faster, smoother entry through the turnstiles. Your phone gets you in — and helps us out.

Every match. Every gig. Every visit. Thanks for doing your bit.
